Traditionally, Muay Thai was very brutal,
even deadly. There were no weight categories, and few rules. There
was also no padding or protection. The fighters in the past wrapped
their hands in either strips of horse hide or hemp rope to protect
their hands and cause their devastating damage to their opponents.
Also the fighters if agreed would dip their hands in a type of glue
and then dip their hands in broken glass to enhance the power of
the punches causing severe cuts and bleeding during the fight. Fighters
would wrap their ankles with cotton wrap and either wear coconut
shells or triangular pillows for groin protection. In those days,
many fighters died in the ring, especially from knees and elbows.
Origins of Muay Thai
Muay Thai also known as Thai Boxing, is said to be slightly over
2000 years old, it's true origins is unknown. In 1769, majority
of the historical records of Thailand were burnt by Thailand's long
time arch enemy, the Burmese or know currently as the Brunile. We
do know that Muay Thai was originally a military art that derived
from Krabee Kabong which is the weapon fightings. They used Muay
Thai to teach villiagers and to sharpen their skills and which became
part of past time traditional activities. Muay Thai dates far back
as the 1560 when king Naresuen (Thai great king and fighting hero)
was taken prisoner as a child by the Burmese army and given a chance
to regain his freedom if he could beat their champion when he was
older. Naresuen is said to have won and became a national hero and
lead the Thailand to many victorious against the burmese.
